1-800-THERAPIST, was created to fill an important community need, that of providing prompt, confidential information to individual callers needing help with their mental health problems. This program provides referrals to licensed professional mental health practitioners for people of all ages who need assistance with a wide range of mental health disciplines and types of care. The referral programs are offered without charge by a group of mental health professionals as a public service. Note: The licensed professional mental health practitioners referrals do pay an annual fee to help defer the cost of this program.

This is a great service provided by the National Council on the Aging. The purpose is to help older adults to quickly identify programs that may improve the quality of their lives. It is very user friendly. Go to the site and preview. You will have to answer a few questions about the person you are helping (or yourself) but no identifying information is asked so it is confidential. The site gives a list of information it needs to determine which programs could be of value. It also has a "help" menu. After you have completed the questionnaire you wait a short time and potential programs are listed and as well as how to access them. It also arranges the information in a nice format so you can print it out.

The National Mental Health Information Center provides information about mental health issues as well as a state service locater for mental health and statistical information. This is the mental health information arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Although there is not a great deal of information specific to seniors, it does cover many categories of mental health problems that do apply to seniors and their caregivers including Alzheimer's Disease, dementia and depression. Under "All About Strokes" is a glossary of terms. They are not detailed but can help you get through the terms that the health care profession commonly uses. "Survivor and Caregivers Resources" also has good information. Businesses are listed by products to help with care. Just keep in mind that they are selling products so it is like going through the yellow pages in a phone book only easier because it is "need specific".

The Bureau of Consumer Protection is a division of the Attorney General's Office that represents the interests of Nevada utility customers before the Public Utilities Commission, any court, regulatory body, board, commission or agency with jurisdiction over Nevada public utilities. Timothy Hay, the Consumer Advocate, and BCP staff work on the consumer's behalf, advocating for reliable utility service at the lowest reasonable cost. The Bureau of Consumer Protection is also the primary prosecutor for telemarketing fraud, consumer fraud, and deceptive trade practices for the State of Nevada. In the past telemarketing scams and consumer fraud have cost consumers nationwide more then billion in one year. The Bureau's technical and legal staff work to prevent these types of practices for the protection of all citizens, particularly the elderly. Seniors can call our office and get assistance with various consumer problems. Our office can provide assistance to people who have been the victim of "slamming" and "cramming". Slamming is where a customer's long distance service is switched from one long distance company to another without the customer's permission. "Cramming" is when a customer is billed for enhanced features such as voice mail, caller-ID, and call-waiting that they have not ordered. Suspected consumer fraud can also be reported. Our Carson City office can be reached at 687-6300. If our office cannot address your particular concern, we will do our best to direct you to someone who can.
